THE STORY OF ROSIE THE RIVETER

Rosie the Riveter was chosen as the Champions of Change Logo because she is a well known historical figure who represents our mission. Rosie the Riveter was a World War II cultural symbol portraying the women who served in factories and shipyards, many of whom produced weapons and supplies for war. Many women took completely new jobs to replace the male staff who had joined the military, however after the war, men took back their jobs and for the most part Rosie was forgotten. By the early 1980s, feminists had been searching for photos from the past that could be revived as a symbol of female empowerment. They settled on Rosie's poster to represent the idea that women are capable of doing jobs traditionally held by men. This symbol is now a message that women can overcome and do anything they set their minds to.
